The Holy Quran has been a source of guidance, peace and inspiration for Muslims worldwide for over 1400 years. In today’s hectic and stressful world, the timeless words of the Quran can provide comfort, hope and direction when they are needed most. As we go about our busy lives, it is easy to get caught up in the distractions of the modern world and lose sight of what really matters.
This is where the Quran can be an invaluable companion, always there to center our hearts and minds. In this article we will share my personal experiences of how reading and reflecting on the Quran has helped me through difficult times and enriched my spiritual life.
The Holy Quran has been a guiding light and source of peace in my life. In recent years as I have strived to understand its teachings more deeply, it has transformed my life for the better. I would like to share my personal experiences of how the Quran uplifted me during a very difficult trial, and continues to inspire me daily.
Diagnosis
The 17th of May, 2005 was an extremely difficult day for me. I was sitting in a hospital with a friend by my side. The doctor looked at me wearily and delivered the devastating news that I had been diagnosed with breast cancer. I felt as though a tsunami had come crashing down on my world. Everything suddenly went dark. The doctor’s voice faded into the distance.
Treatment Plan
After a few moments, the doctor provide me a packet and said, “You will need to undergo various tests, surgeries, and appointments with numerous specialists. This will be a long and difficult process.”
The rigorous treatment plan began. My appointments with doctors dragged on for a long period. The doctor advised, “Always look on the bright side. Stay positive.”
I realized I already had a reason to stay positive – my faith in Allah. As He assures us in the Qur’an: “Do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.” (Surah Az-Zumar, 39:53) Knowing I could put my full trust in Allah gave me courage.
Parallels with Islamic Teachings
The doctor warned me not to miss any doses of medicine due to the risk of cancer returning. This reminded me of the importance of performing Salah consistently. Just as I would not want to miss prayers in this world and lose rewards in the next, I could not afford to miss doses of medicine that could impact my health. Diligence in both matters is essential. As we will all pass on from this life, but never from the eternal life to come, we must be even more cautious about deeds for the Hereafter.

The doctor recommended regular exercise that induces sweating. This mirrored the advice of a scholar who said: “What value is a prayer that does not soften your heart, moisten your eyes or move your soul?” Outward physical motions alone are insufficient – it is vital to put your heart and soul into worship.
I was encouraged to join a support group, make new friends and share my struggles. Islam teaches similar values – finding strength through community, opening up to others, and staying active and surrounded by people, rather than isolated.

The soft, soothing voice of my teacher explaining lessons calms my soul. Her wisdom guides me to apply lessons from the Quran to challenges in my own life. I listen intently to every word, feeling at peace.
